Magnetization transfer contrast enhancement due to intermolecular multiple quantum coherences - quantitative analysis and tissue dependency

چکیده
Introduction Recently published studies [1,2], showed an increased sensitivity of intermolecular multiple quantum coherences (iMQC) to magnetization transfer (MT) effects compared to single quantum coherences (SQC). The image contrast in magnetization transfer contrast (MTC) MRI is proportional to (Mz/M0) , where Mz is the actual longitudinal magnetization, M0 is the equilibrium magnetization and n denotes the order of the quantum coherence used (n=1 for SQC, n=2 for iDQC and so on). The aim of this work was to quantify this contrast enhancement and to determine the dependency of this effect on the tissue used. Experiments were performed on a 9.4-T animal scanner.

Enhancement of MT, CEST and NOE Contrast via Intermolecular Multiple Quantum Coherences
Introduction Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) [1] provides a mechanism for MRI contrast originating from tissue constituents that exchange protons with the bulk water molecules. Recently it was shown [2], that magnetization transfer contrast (MTC) can be enhanced by a combination with intermolecular multiple quantum coherences (iMQC) [3-5]. In this approach the ratio S/S0 (S and S0 ...

Introduction In liquids, intermolecular multiple-quantum coherences (iMQC) originate from the distant dipolar fields that are generally ignored in conventional framework of magnetic resonance [1-3]. It has been shown that MR images based on detection of iMQC (e.g., zeroquantum iZQC and double-quantum iDQC) give tumor enhancement in rat brains and novel contrast in human brain imaging (including...

The behavior of intermolecular multiple-quantum coherences in a variety of simple liquids with different chemical and magnetic properties is investigated experimentally and modeled by numerical simulations based on modified Bloch equations. The effects of spin concentration, temperature, intramolecular conformational flexibility, chemical exchange, and spin-spin coupling on the formation of hig...
متن کاملA Novel Classification Method using Effective Neural Network and Quantitative Magnetization Transfer Imaging of Brain White Matter in Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis
Background: Quantitative Magnetization Transfer Imaging (QMTI) is often used to quantify the myelin content in multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions and normal appearing brain tissues. Also, automated classifiers such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) can significantly improve the identification and classification processes of MS clinical datasets. Objective: We classified patients with relapsing-r...
متن کاملPathological Assessment of Brain White Matter in Relapsing-Remitting MS Patients using Quantitative Magnetization Transfer Imaging
Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by lesions in the white matter (WM) of the central nervous system. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most specific and sensitive method for diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. However, the ability of conventional MRI to show histopathologic heterogeneity of MS lesions is insufficient. Quantitative magnetization transfer imaging (qMTI) is a rel...
